Data shows increase in number of applicants lying about education qualifications on job applications

Brookfield, WI - The Liars Index® reached 21.43% for the first six months of 2010. Calculated semi-annually by Jude M. Werra & Associates, the Brookfield, Wisconsin executive search firm, the Liars Index® reports the percentage of executives who misrepresent their education claims on the resumes they submit to the firm.

“This latest increase in the Index is the highest in some ten years,” said Jude Werra, president. “The peak of the Index over the past sixteen years was at 23.30%, in the first half of 2000”. “The rolling average for the last two years also trended upward, to 16.20%, approaching the 17.60% mark of ten years ago. The rolling average record rate was in the first half of 2000, when it reached 18.50%.”

Werra notes that the current data parallels the increases during the 2000-2001 recessionary period. This may suggest that as the national unemployment statistics rise the percentage of puffery and outright lies about educational credentials appear to rise right along them.

“What seems to escape the liars’ understanding is that by our survey, 95% of the time employers will eliminate from consideration candidates who claim degrees they did not earn. Of course, employers who fail to verify education claims run great risks as well, in hiring people who lie on their resumes.

The wise employer will use care in avoiding a candidate who only talks a good game. Checking the education before candidates advance very far in the screening process can save much disappointment.” he said.
